15 July Just a quick updateWouldn't want anyone to think I was ignoring the old blog again...but I'm out of the office on a bit of a 'working vacation' - a few meetings but some family events as well - in Providence RI and Boston MA for the past few and next few days. So no new tidbits other than this quick post.
And I wanted to mention a couple of potential issues! First off, while travelling to Miami last week on business, I suddenly discovered that I couldn't hear anything while making a call on my iPhone. It turned out that the handset feature (you know, holding the phone up to my ear) wasn't working, but speakerphone worked fine! This happened after I had been making calls throughout the day using the earbuds, so Ifiddled around, popped the earbuds in and out a couple times, and the problem went away. It wasn't a huge deal, and hasn't recurred, but at the time it was more than a little frustrating. Nowhere near as frustrating as when my mail stopped working though. 'Trouble communicating with the mail server' was the error. Turned out that somehow my iPhone decided to turn off encryption for my work account. Of course there was trouble communicating with the mail server - it basically balked at unencrypted communications. The fix was simple enough (the setting is found under the mail account, scroll down to hit the advanced settings) but took a little while for me to figure out. On the other hand, it's been a dream (other than spotty coverage within my family's house here in East Greenwich) on this trip, and gained a bit of attention in the plane when I was using it for playing tunes during the flight. There was a teeniebopper sitting behind me that kept sneaking peeks and finally asked how I liked it after we landed. Of course I told her it rocked!
<And a quick edit> lest someone misinterpret this - the only carrier that seems to get good coverage in East Greenwich, RI appears to be verizon. I switched from T-Mobile to ATTWS when I got the iPhone and can attest that the coverage might be slightly worse, but not significantly so - T-Mobile pretty much sucked up here as well. 11 July iPhone update this fall?Pulled this from Mike Cane's Blog, where he cross posted something he found on the Hackint0sh forums, where they seem to have cross posted from Howard's Forums, a nice cell phone site. So basically it's fourth party hearsay, but would be pretty nice if true!
07 July Latest Phishing AttemptOff the beaten iPhone path for the moment (Suffice it to say, I am still enamoured with my little friend) to bring us back to a new phishing scam. Got the following (caught by my junk filter) with a subject of 'Please Confirm':
Rather clever I think, alluding to the fact that some loan won't be locked in at a lower rate if you don't fill the form out. As usual, the grammer is more than a little awkward, but this one is fairly well written, other than the misspellings. Of course, the email domain the message originates from doesn't match the link, and the link certainly doesn't sound like anything bank related, but still - I'm sure some folks fell for it. 05 July CNN's iPhone reviewIt can be found here. Which leads me to today's subject - iPhone reviews. I've been reading a bundle of them (I'll link to a few) -for example, PC Magazine's. And they eave me a bit confused. 'Cause generally speaking if you read the summary of these reviews, the iPhone is a flop. Then you look at the rating and it consisitently gets 8 or 9 out of 10 (or 4 out of 5 stars). What's the deal? For my part, I'm pretty darned satisfied. It does everything it was supposed to do, and I am of course trying to figure out how to make it do a fe things it isn't supposed to do. Corporate mail is a challenge, but the tehtered sync (as I've mentioned before) works great. To me the smoothest feature so far? Call waiting. I mean the way call waiting works. Basically I called a client, was leaving a voicemail for him, when he must have seen that i called his cell and called me immediately back. The iPhone picked up the second call and gave me the option on-screen to put the first on hold and pick-up, hang up the first and pick-up, or ignore and continue with the first. All easy to understand. As a WinMobile smartphone user, I've never had such a smooth experience. I've heard rumors that a Blackberry will do the same thing (I haven't played with a latter-generation one, but I probably should) but on WinMobile this scenario always left me scrambling trying to figure out how to hang up while not losing that second call. Most of the time I wound up hangin gup on both and having to call back again. Not anymore. 03 July iPhone wishlistI figured after half a week relying on the iPhone as my sole method for communication while onsite with clients, I would start putting together my wishlist - things that i wish it did, or did differently. It's not a really long list so far, but there are a few significant items:
That's about it for now, other than 3G capability - but that's for another time I suppose, once EDGE starts to grow tiresome for me. Oh, funny story - I've been keeping my new 'friend' hidden away low key in my pocket when onsite with clients. The Administrative Assistant with one of my current clients was bragging to me this morning that she spent all day yesterday - a day off for her - at the nearby mall playing with the iPhone at the Apple store, and how cool it was, and how she was trying to decide if she wanted one.! I couldn't help myself but to offer to let her play with mine for a while, after which she declared she was going to go get one this weekend after all. 02 July iPhone and ActiveSync?Found a post from Mary Jo Foley that claims Apple has licensed Exchange Activesync from Microsoft for planned integration with the iPhone. I have no idea if it's true, but if it is the entire game changes with regard to corporate adoption of iPhone as a smartphone platform! iPhone and MailSo I think the most annoying - one of the few annoying - things I've come across so far is synchronizing my email. Not getting my mail - that works great - but syncing what has been deleted.
Basically, when I delete something on the iPhone it goes to the trash container on the phone, and in theory should hit the deleted items folder that is specified in my IMAP settings. Except it doesn't. So far, anyhow.
I tried enabling Outlook Sync in iTunes to address this - I thought/hoped that when the sync happened it might run through the inbox content on both and dump what shouldn't be there anymore. No joy.
I happened across a setting though that i hope will help - it flags how often to empty the local trash on the iPhone. I've seen IMAP clients in the past that only dump items on the server when the local deleted items store empties, so we'll see if this helps.
I'm not endorsing it yet, but you can get there by hitting Settings -> Mail -> (Your email account) -> Advanced. I set the empty period to be 'After One Day.' We'll see if it helps! 01 July Less Obvious iPhone tipsIt's day two and I'm still pretty happy with the old iPhone- thought I'd share a few quick tips:
