    Just a quick update

Wouldn't want anyone to think I was ignoring the old blog again...but I'm out of the office on a bit of a 'working vacation' - a few meetings but some family events as well - in Providence RI and Boston MA for the past few and next few days.  So no new tidbits other than this quick post.

And I wanted to mention a couple of potential issues!  First off, while travelling to Miami last week on business, I suddenly discovered that I couldn't hear anything while making a call on my iPhone.  It turned out that the handset feature (you know, holding the phone up to my ear) wasn't working, but speakerphone worked fine!  This happened after I had been making calls throughout the day using the earbuds, so Ifiddled around, popped the earbuds in and out a couple times, and the problem went away.  It wasn't a huge deal, and hasn't recurred, but at the time it was more than a little frustrating.

Nowhere near as frustrating as when my mail stopped working though.  'Trouble communicating with the mail server' was the error.  Turned out that somehow my iPhone decided to turn off encryption for my work account.  Of course there was trouble communicating with the mail server - it basically balked at unencrypted communications.  The fix was simple enough (the setting is found under the mail account, scroll down to hit the advanced settings) but took a little while for me to figure out.

On the other hand, it's been a dream (other than spotty coverage within my family's house here in East Greenwich) on this trip, and gained a bit of attention in the plane when I was using it for playing tunes during the flight.  There was a teeniebopper sitting behind me that kept sneaking peeks and finally asked how I liked it after we landed.  Of course I told her it rocked!

<And a quick edit> lest someone misinterpret this - the only carrier that seems to get good coverage in East Greenwich, RI appears to be verizon.  I switched from T-Mobile to ATTWS when I got the iPhone and can attest that the coverage might be slightly worse, but not significantly so - T-Mobile pretty much sucked up here as well.

    iPhone update this fall?

Pulled this from Mike Cane's Blog, where he cross posted something he found on the Hackint0sh forums, where they seem to have cross posted from Howard's Forums, a nice cell phone site.  So basically it's fourth party hearsay, but would be pretty nice if true!

Everyone Who’s Disappointed, I Have Good News!

I met with my buddy from Apple for Coffee today, I told him I loved the interface, and all the great subtle little features it has that makes it so easy to use. I then told him I really, wanted a File System Access so I could store files, download images from the web, and generally carry around data, not just load it up from iTunes..

He said Apple IS absolutely BUILDING this, and it will come in a software update no later than when Leopard ships in two months (there will be updates before this)

    Here is what he said:

    * There will be a build in file browser like the new finder in leopard for sorting through files

    * There will be a disk mode

    * The reason that there currently isn’t a file browser + way to save files from web is because there isn’t a file browser on the phone, and they wanted to release the same one that’s gonna be in the upcoming leopard OS, complete with coverflow.

    * There will even be a special version of “iWork” so you can show your keynote presentations

    * So anyway a FULL file browser is coming so you can browse just like windows mobile explorer only in the cool way leopard’s file browser is

    * Full spotlight like search is coming too

    * Widescreen keyboard support will be coming in every app, not just safari

    * Copy & Paste, Select Text is coming too (clipboard)

    * Also mail will see an upgrade so you can add accounts without doing so through itunes.

    * Most of the delays in this is because iTunes is the App Windows & Mac users are familar with for iTunes, so Apple didn’t want to do a bad interface that had a file browser hacked into iTunes.

    * When Leopard FINAL release comes out, plugging in the iPhone will pop open a special window in the finder that has areas for dragging all your files like a file explorer only more advanced and designed specifically for the iPhone, it will make sure that it works so iTunes knows how much space is for data, and how much is for “iTunes” stuff.

    * Apple will be putting iChat on the phone, very, very soon, before Leopard.

    * Real Applications are coming to the phone shortly.

    * These are all updates that will be software based for the iPhone you already have, so give it a little bit of time. In the meantime enjoy the features it already has.

    * Oh and also there will be Photo Sharing, just like in iPhoto how you can check an option to let other people on the network view your photos.

    * He said .Mac account would eventually sync your accounts to the .Mac server as well from the phone, and so forth.

    * Simplified File sharing when on WIFI networks through bonjour (auto ip discovery) is coming, so once the file system software is up, your buddy in the same room will be able to navigate to his file browser > Network, and grab a file off your phone that you are sharing.

    * Ringtones will be coming very, very soon.

    * The Camera Software will get upgraded soon to have stabilization (software based)

    * Flash is coming eventually, it’s just a matter of handling it in a way so when i page has dozens of flash apps running at the same time the page doesn’t slow to a crawl, so they have to take the Adobe flash and make some customizations, including for security.

    * Anyway, enjoy the great mobile phone for now, and look forward to all the great stuff coming really, really soon. I can’t WAIT for the new file browser so I can store stuff on this device!!

    * Just remember Windows Mobile has been out or a long time, even everytime a new WM phone comes out all the apps that are supposed to work, have to be tweaked or don’t fit on the screen or some bullcrap, so realize this is just Apple’s very first OS release for mobile Phone. Apple has lots of treats instore for all of you.

I probably missed a few things, so if you have questions about features that will be software updated, ask because I only typed what I could remember right now, and we talked about quite a bit of stuff!!!!

    Latest Phishing Attempt

Off the beaten iPhone path for the moment (Suffice it to say, I am still enamoured with my little friend) to bring us back to a new phishing scam.

Got the following (caught by my junk filter) with a subject of 'Please Confirm':

    Client Update:

We were able to view your credit report and recent application but still need for you to complete our finalization form.

As of today we will be able to lock your refinance in at the rate we promised, but if our finaliztion form IS NOT completed within 24 hours then the rate will come unlocked.

Please remember to confirm details on this secure form:

    http://client-id290_confirm_July05.healthyyserr_Ibrokethatlink.com

I look forward to conversing with you.

    Blanca Jaramillo

    Senior Account Manager,

    -Lender Alliance Office

Rather clever I think, alluding to the fact that some loan won't be locked in at a lower rate if you don't fill the form out.  As usual, the grammer is more than a little awkward, but this one is fairly well written, other than the misspellings.  Of course, the email domain the message originates from doesn't match the link, and the link certainly doesn't sound like anything bank related, but still - I'm sure some folks fell for it.

    CNN's iPhone review

    It can be found here.

Which leads me to today's subject - iPhone reviews.  I've been reading a bundle of them (I'll link to a few) -for example, PC Magazine's.  And they eave me a bit confused.

'Cause generally speaking if you read the summary of these reviews, the iPhone is a flop.  Then you look at the rating and it consisitently gets 8 or 9 out of 10 (or 4 out of 5 stars). What's the deal?

For my part, I'm pretty darned satisfied.  It does everything it was supposed to do, and I am of course trying to figure out how to make it do a fe things it isn't supposed to do.  Corporate mail is a challenge, but the tehtered sync (as I've mentioned before) works great.

To me the smoothest feature so far? Call waiting.  I mean the way call waiting works.  Basically I called a client, was leaving a voicemail for him, when he must have seen that i called his cell and called me immediately back.  The iPhone picked up the second call and gave me the option on-screen to put the first on hold and pick-up, hang up the first and pick-up, or ignore and continue with the first.  All easy to understand.

As a WinMobile smartphone user, I've never had such a smooth experience.  I've heard rumors that a Blackberry will do the same thing (I haven't played with a latter-generation one, but I probably should) but on WinMobile this scenario always left me scrambling trying to figure out how to hang up while not losing that second call.  Most of the time I wound up hangin gup on both and having to call back again.

    Not anymore.

    iPhone wishlist

I figured after half a week relying on the iPhone as my sole method for communication while onsite with clients, I would start putting together my wishlist - things that i wish it did, or did differently.

It's not a really long list so far, but there are a few significant items:

    • Top of any wishlist has to start with Exchange ActiveSync support - a few short years ago the tethered synchronization with online mail capabilities would have been perfect - but these days I want everything in sync wirelessly, all the time.
    • Ability to Snooze a reminder - for some reason there doesn't appear to be any way to snooze or sleep a reminder - you know what I mean, 'remind me in five minutes' sort of snoozing.  Oddly enough, you can snooze an alarm if you set one in the clock, but not an event reminder.  Also a bit odd (and a neat touch): you canset a second reminder for an event - remind me an hour before, and then 15 minutes before, for example.
    • Games! - I mean, who hasn't spent time on the road playing solitaire or bubble breaker?  All games are oddly absent, which is really wierd for a supposedly consumer-targetted device!
    • MMS Messages - not a big deal for me, but it would be nice, and there doesn't seem to really be a good excuse for not supporting it.
    • An agenda view in Calendar - not a deal breaker but I like an agenda view for my day, including one that highlights...
    • Tasks!  - Why not sync them as well?

That's about it for now, other than 3G capability - but that's for another time I suppose, once EDGE starts to grow tiresome for me.

Oh, funny story - I've been keeping my new 'friend' hidden away low key in my pocket when onsite with clients.  The Administrative Assistant with one of my current clients was bragging to me this morning that she spent all day yesterday - a day off for her - at the nearby mall playing with the iPhone at the Apple store, and how cool it was, and how she was trying to decide if she wanted one.!  I couldn't help myself but to offer to let her play with mine for a while, after which she declared she was going to go get one this weekend after all.

    iPhone and ActiveSync?

Found a post from Mary Jo Foley that claims Apple has licensed Exchange Activesync from Microsoft for planned integration with the iPhone.  I have no idea if it's true, but if it is the entire game changes with regard to corporate adoption of iPhone as a smartphone platform!

    iPhone and Mail

So I think the most annoying - one of the few annoying - things I've come across so far is synchronizing my email.  Not getting my mail - that works great - but syncing what has been deleted.

Basically, when I delete something on the iPhone it goes to the trash container on the phone, and in theory should hit the deleted items folder that is specified in my IMAP settings.  Except it doesn't.  So far, anyhow.

I tried enabling Outlook Sync in iTunes to address this - I thought/hoped that when the sync happened it might run through the inbox content on both and dump what shouldn't be there anymore.  No joy.

I happened across a setting though that i hope will help - it flags how often to empty the local trash on the iPhone.  I've seen IMAP clients in the past that only dump items on the server when the local deleted items store empties, so we'll see if this helps.

I'm not endorsing it yet, but you can get there by hitting Settings -> Mail -> (Your email account) -> Advanced.  I set the empty period to be 'After One Day.'  We'll see if it helps!

    Less Obvious iPhone tips

It's day two and I'm still pretty happy with the old iPhone- thought I'd share a few quick tips:

    • You really need to manage your synchronized data, especially if you are syncing video.  i generally don't sync much video other than a couple of video podcasts, so it's not a big deal to me, but you probably need to manage what movies are synching at any given time - before a trip for example.
    • I mentioned trying to figure out how to jump ahead in the contact list when getting ready to make a call - well I (numbly) missed the simple idea ofclicking on the appropriate letter on the right-hand side of the contact list.  Basically you can either click or click and drag to get to the letter you want, then flick up or down to get to the correct contact
    • Use 'favorites' to get quick access to your most used contacts - sort of like speed dialing except you can either click the contact to dial the favorite number, or click the little blue arrow on the right side of the contact to see all the ways to contact that person
    • Customizing ringtones for contacts - or adding pics - is really easy.  you just open the contact, click 'edit,' and then select "Add Photo" at the upper left-corner, or click on 'Assign Ringtone.'  You can zoom or drag the selected photo to customize exactly what you see when you receive a call. Worth Noting: You can't do this from within the favorites, but only from within the actual 'contacts' function!
    • The little blue arrow to the right of a contact or call is a visual clue that isn't quite as instinctive as most of the others present in the iPhone.  From a missed or received call (or dialed call for that matter) you can click on the blue arrow and it will let you do all sorts of things to that number, including create a new contact or assign it to an existing contact.  This is especially useful to me because I will often have a new contact ring my phone as a way of giving me their number, then create a contact from that number.   Now I can!
